Vocational training review - no immediate change

apprentices apprenticeships training

It's business as usual for our members, hosts and apprentices following the Government's Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE) outcome announced by Education Minister Chris Hipkins.

There are some key points to note from yesterday's announcement regarding the future of training for our industry.

  1. Employers and apprentices should notice little change over 2019-2020.
  2. From next April, the 16 existing Institutes of Technology and Polytechs will become subsidiaries of a new national Institute (official name and location yet to be decided).
  3. The transition phase begins on 1 April 2020 and is expected to take around 3 years.
  4. Training providers will take over Industry Training Organisations' (ITOs') role of supporting workplace learning and assessment by 2022, giving plenty of time to ensure a smooth transition.

The message from Master Plumbers is to keep training—our industry must continue to address significant skills shortages and apprentices are the solution.
