Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act Review

PGD Act Review

Current Situation

The Plumbing Gasfitting and Drainlaying Act sets out the restrictions on sanitary plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying work. The statutory review of the Act was completed in March 2021, eight years overdue.

Following the review, MBIE made some proposed changes, including the removal of exemptions for sanitary plumbing work and the development of a pathway to self-certification for plumbers and drainlayers.

A draft Bill was expected to be introduced in early 2022 but this has not yet happened.

Our position

  • Master Plumbers acts in the interests of the plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying industry
  • We survey our members for feedback and this informs our submissions to government.

We want

  • Self-certification for plumbers and drainlayers
  • The removal of householder sanitary plumbing exemptions and plumbing work under supervision exemptions.
