COVID-19 construction health & safety business advice

Master Plumbers has created a Business and Site checklist document to help Member plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying businesses prepare for a return to work under COVID-19 Alert Level 3 (diagram from document pictured here). The checklist document is available in the website MEMBER LOG-IN

From Wednesday 22 April, construction businesses are allowed a minimal number of people on-site to complete activities that prepare their workplace for a safe opening under Alert Level 3. Find out more HERE

Under Alert Level 3, all businesses permitted to resume operations need to have a COVID-19 Safety Plan that sets out how they’ll operate safely .

You need to develop a plan before work begins again. You also need to discuss and share the plan with everyone at work—including workers, contractors, and suppliers—before the work starts. You should review and update your plan regularly.

WorkSafe have created a template COVID-19 Safety Plan that you can choose to use to help with your planning.

For businesses, operating as an essential service under Alert Level 4, including plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying businesses, a start up plan is not required. However, the controls they have in place need to continue once New Zealand transitions to Alert Level 3.

The key controls that have been decided as necessary to minimise the risk of passing on the COVID-19 virus at work are:

  • supporting people with flu-like symptoms to self-isolate
  • ensuring separation distances
  • disinfecting surfaces
  • maintaining good hygiene, particularly hand hygiene and good cough/sneeze etiquette
  • keeping records to facilitate contact tracing.
